Students and staff heavily impacted by Ditwah: Dep Min
View(s):Around 820,000 school children and about 48,000 education staff, including teachers, were impacted by Cyclone Ditwah, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said.
In a statement in Parliament, he said that 1,682 schools (16.7% of the total school population) were damaged and of these 137 schools were seriously damaged or destroyed.
Around 80% of them are in the Central and Uva provinces.
In addition to this, 2,700 schools and 15-20% of early childhood development centers also suffered damage, he said.
He said this damage is not only a matter of infrastructure, they have a humanitarian and social cost.
He said that students from schools that have been affected by transportation difficulties and disasters will be provided with the nearest school to their residence while Zonal Education Department will provide temporary opportunities for academic activities in temporary locations.
The Directors of Education have been delegated authority to update the names of students affected by the disaster and their needs.
Numerous other measures have been taken to ease the burden placed on students and education sector staff, he added. (DW)
