A five-member committee appointed by the Education Ministry has launched an investigation into issues related to the ‘1000 National Schools Programme’ of the previous government.

The programme was launched with the aim of converting selected schools within the school system into national schools. The investigation was launched after Parliament’s Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) slammed the programme, noting that although approximately Rs. 2.285 billion has been spent on this programme, only 22 schools have been converted into national schools so far.

The Education Ministry disclosed the appointment of the committee in its recent submission to Parliament of observations and steps taken regarding the reports tabled by COPA. (SJ)
