Gateway College students delivered an outstanding performance at Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN), a prestigious four-day international high school conference held from 8–11 January 2026 at the Le Méridien Hotel and Conference Centre in Dubai. The conference brought together approximately 800 participants from nearly 30 countries, including student delegates, chairs, and faculty advisors, creating a truly global platform for dialogue, diplomacy, and collaboration.

HMUN Dubai simulated United Nations negotiations through a wide range of committees such as the Disarmament and International Security Committee, Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, and Legal Committee, engaging students in rigorous debate on complex global issues. The programme was further enriched by social events, academic mentoring, and expert contributions from partner institutions such as Middlesex University Dubai, ensuring a holistic and intellectually stimulating experience.

The Gateway College delegation distinguished itself through exceptional performance across committees, earning well-deserved recognition. Dhanuka Wijegooneratne (Brazil), representing the Commission on the Status of Women, achieved the conference’s highest individual honour, winning Best Delegate for his outstanding advocacy, command of policy, and persuasive oratory. Aiden Thomas (United Kingdom), representing the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, received an Honourable Mention for his articulate debate and thoughtful engagement with humanitarian issues. Sanuka Opatha (United Kingdom), competing in the World Health Organization, was awarded a Diplomatic Commendation in recognition of his balanced diplomacy, research depth, and collaborative leadership.

In addition to committee sessions, the conference featured HMUNx, a unique platform designed to amplify student voices beyond traditional debate. HMUNx offers selected delegates the opportunity to deliver a five-minute keynote speech on topics they are passionate about ranging from social impact and personal narratives to innovation and global change. From a highly competitive selection, two students from the Gateway College delegation, Jehan Gunaratne and Gishanka Perera, were chosen to present their keynote speeches at HMUNx, a significant honour that reflects their originality, confidence, and ability to inspire a global audience.

The achievements of the Gateway College delegation at HMUN stand as a testament to the students’ dedication, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to global citizenship. Their success not only brought pride to the school but also reaffirmed Gateway College’s strong tradition of excellence in leadership, international engagement, and academic distinction.
