They are intoxicated with a passion to put an end to alcoholism amongst the youth. The CMB volunteers, a group under the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) was formed to reduce the alcohol and drug demand among youth and are focusing on creating methods of drug prevention through innovative approaches. Having established that the traditional poster campaigns prove futile, the CMB Volunteers have a novel idea to get their message across.

Showing off their messages: The young volunteers behind Elixier 13

CMB Volunteers will collaborate with three leading design schools in Colombo to conduct a designer festival: Elixier 13’-design for change powered by CINEC. Talented young designers from Raffles, Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology (LIFT) and the University of Moratuwa will take part in the competition and submit their designs on the theme of Prevention slogans: awareness on alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention.

With catchy phrases they hope to bring a new aspect into eradicating the threat of alcoholism and smoking, “I’m updated, Smoking is outdated”, “I’m a party dancer, not a lousy drinker”, “I don’t smell, I don’t smoke”, “Who said alcohol is fun?”, “Drinkers are outdated, occasionally drinkers are occasionally outdated” are the themes for the night.

The aim of this festival is to create awareness and to promote alcohol and tobacco prevention designs among the youth. Ten designers were provided initially by each participating institute and 12 selected for the final round where judges will decide the winner. The winner will receive a grand prize of Rs. 50,000. Second prize is Rs. 30,000 and the third prize is Rs. 20,000. CINEC has partnered with the volunteers as the platinum sponsor. Achievers, Commercial Bank, Asian Allianz and Zsaid images are the co-sponsors for the Elixier 2013.

Former Miss. Sri Lanka, Rozanne Dias has helped CMB by co-coordinating and giving her expertise to make the event a success.  Rozanne along with Venuka Yasasri, Sidu Bashu and two representatives from ADIC were involved in the selection process. The competition finale will be an extravagant event with many celebrities, professionals and academics expected to attend.

The event will be held at the Park Street Mews on March 9 from 5 p.m. onwards.
