Tuesday, January 22 marks the 69th birth anniversary of one of Kandy’s high caliber sportsman – the late Daya Jayasundera.
Daya, who hailed from a celebrated Rajan sporting family, represented his school in cricket, boxing, athletics, hockey and soccer. Although his school did not play rugby at that time, Daya was into his stride soon enough, playing for Kandy SC under the sewardship of Maurice Perera.
He joined the Police as a Sub Inspector in 1968 and ended up as a DIG. He turned out for Police from 1968 to 1978, leading the side in 1976. He played in the Sri Lanka team for six years, starting with the 1973 Asiad. The national team was led by Y.C. Chang and included, inter alia, Indrajith Coomaraswamy.
He was one of the leading rugby referees during his ten year stint. The Brady was grist to his mill. A member of the National Selection Committee and a former Manager of the Sri Lanka team, this genial flank forward’s name will be hard to forget. – AK
