Colombo International School produced a superlative display to race to an emphatic 63-48 victory over St. Joseph’s College, to clinch the All-Island Under 17 Division Á basketball crown, following their finals clash at the Royal College basketball courts.

CIS were off the blocks in a flash and never relinquished their stranglehold of the game, which they grabbed after the match’s opening exchanges. They embellished their fantastic team play with spectacular sequences of individual offense and defense, which more often than not were created by tournament Most Valuable Player, Onello Gilbert (27 points) and Best Defensive Player, Dulara Dharmadasa (27).

With this momentum, they raced into halftime with a significant 34-15 lead, before eventually running circles around the spellbound Joes in the third and fourth quarters, and bursting across the line in a blaze of dominance. The only consolation for St. Joseph’s College was the play of Arun David (17), the competition’s Best Defensive Player, and Mayantha Annesley.

In the battle for third place, Royal College, who were beaten by CIS in the semifinals, steamrolled St. Benedict’s College by a massive74 points to 47. In a commanding exhibition of their offensive might, their awe-striking arsenal included Julian Gunasinghe (27), Shamath Ilyaz (19) and Nisal Pinto (13). The lone warrior for St. Benedict’s College was Supun Lakmal, who tried to rouse his team with a majestic 28-point performance. Praveen Ganlath chipped in with six points. (DS)
