The Certificate Level-Stage 1 of the Engineering Course conducted by the College of Engineering of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka(IESLCE) was inaugurated on Saturday, 12th January 2012 at the Headquarters of the institution at 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7. Eng. P Ranepura, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education was the chief guest for the occasion which was attended by a large number of newly enrolled students and their parents.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education tells students and parents –
“You have made the best of both choices”

Speaking at the occasion Eng.P.Ranepura,praised the students and their parents for their choice of engineering as a course of study and the picking of the IESLCE in which to do so. He described them as particularly courageous for their choice of the mathematics stream, which has traditionally the lowest average marks scored among all subjects, and their determination to achieve their expectations of becoming an engineer in the face of the limited places available at the state universities. He said that there is an unending debate on the role of education with some saying that education increases the cognitive ability in a world that is fast changing but others saying that its relationship to life of people, such as assured employment in later life, should be more important. He pointed out in this regard that the engineering field is guaranteed of high earning jobs. He said that now that the choices are already made what’sneeded is their commitment. Choosing the IESL, the premier professional body for engineers in which to pursue their engineering course is another good decision as there are no quality issues and real quality education by very able staff is assured, he added.

P.Ranepura, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education President, IESL Eng. Tilak De Silva and Eng. W J L S Fernando, President Elect, IESL seated at the podium.

He also declared that learning is a lifelong process.and that exams are tests of one day only and because of the stiff competition many good students are unable to enter the best schools and universities. He said that’s why IESL and other institutions that provide alternate pathways should enter the field, the one condition being the quality of education. He however emphasized that certificates alone are notenough and that inculcating good habits and the acquiring of soft skills like Communication, Team Work, Leadership Qualities, Commitment, Integrity and Hardwork are much sought after in new recruits. He said that Managers are now talking about Emotional Intelligence, EQ, as against Intelligence in the traditional sense, IQ. He said that simply understanding one’s self and control and management of one’s emotion together withunderstanding social affairs and relationship management are powerful tools in ability to deal with people.

President of IESL – “It’s in the best interest of the IESL to provide highest standard of engineering education through its fully owned College of Engineering”

The President of the IESL, Eng. Tilak De Silva earlier in his welcome speech pointed out the important role the College of Engineering plays in providing engineering education to those eligible to enter universities yet unable to gain entrance to engineering faculties of state universities due to limited intake. He pointed out that the IESL being the professional body for engineering in the country is tasked with undertaking all possible efforts in its capacity to raise and maintainthe standards of the practice and practitioners of engineering in the country and that it’s the sole authority that confers Charter status to engineers in the country through a

rigorous assessment process .He said, the IESL endeavors to position itself among reputed international professional bodies conforming to highest

professional standards. In this regards he said that IESL is already a provisional member of the international forum, Washington Accord (WA), for accreditation of engineering education the world over and looking to gain its full membership. He pointed out the revisions to IESL accreditation instruments in line with WA requirements, training to accreditation panel members and university academics undertaken by the IESL in this regard. Thus it’s in the best interest of IESL to provide outcome based engineering education of the highest standards in its engineering courses in keeping with international standards he added.

He said “the engineering course conducted by the IESLCE , recognized as an equivalent to engineering degrees offered by state universities in the country, fulfills the academic qualifications required to become a fully-fledged engineer.

The qualification is well recognized to gain employment as a qualified engineer, both in the state and the private sector. Thus the IESL Engineering Course has become a top choice for those students who wish to pursue engineering as a professional career but deprived of gaining entry to state universities due to various reasons.”

“The course consists of three levels, Certificate, Advanced Diploma and the Graduate Diploma. It is specially designed to facilitate lateral entry at the start of levels 1 and 2 and multiple exits, at the end of each level. The curriculum has also been revised recently to improve its quality, relevance and effectiveness and also to promote outcome-based education, gearing the students to be successful in a dynamic and challenging work environment. The students have the choice of selecting several fields of specialization from civil, electrical, mechanical and electronic, communication and computer engineering.

A major advantage in following the course is the students who satisfactorily complete the course are eligible to become Associate Members of the IESL, a professional qualification well recognized by the state and the private sector alike, paving their way to a successful career as an Engineer.”
