Foreign employment authorities are to set up a committee at the very earliest, to probe a multi-million rupee racket involving the smuggling of Sri Lankan workers to US and NATO bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, a top official said yesterday.
Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLFEB) Chairman Amal Senadhilankara told the Sunday Times that the committee, comprising of officials from the Bureau, Immigration, External Affairs and police will work towards stamping out the menace that has been in existence for a considerable period of time.

“In addition, the cooperation of foreign State agencies will also be sought towards this end, and together, we hope to bring an end to this racket that largely revolves around a single individual operating in the country and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE),” Mr. Senadhilankara said.

Meanwhile, the Immigration and Emigration authorities are also holding a separate investigation into the matter, following information that some of these persons were also traveling on doctored travel documents and visas. The matter has been handed over to the Special Investigation Unit at the Department, and a full report is expected shortly, Immigration Chief Chunananda Perera said.
