Traffic police personnel on road duty will be provided with a mask and eye shades that must be worn while on active duty.
Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Amarasiri Senaratne told the Sunday Times that the decision was taken after research by the University of Moratuwa revealed that there was a high lead content in the bodies of police officers who did traffic duty in the city.

Previous attempts to get the policemen to use the mask were not successful as the officers found the mask interfered in their work, but following the study the traffic policemen will now be advised to use them. DIG Senaratne said traffic policemen tested at the Eye Hospital were found to be suffering from eye damage from long hours in the sun.

Some 1,000 shades have been imported for distribution at police stations in Colombo. The new facewear will come into effect at the end of the month.
