Tourists, Navy personnel and fishing communities are advised not to go out to sea today as strong winds accompanied by showers and thundershowers are expected today in the seas off the coast of Sri Lanka. A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal southeast of Sri Lanka has produced the bad weather conditions, said a Department of Meteorology spokesperson.

Heavy rains are likely today in the Eastern, Central, Uva and Southern Provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district.
“Strong winds will continue in sea areas off the coast from Batticaloa to Galle through Hambantota,” said meteorologist Anusha Warnasuriya. The sea will be rough in these areas, he said. Seas off the coast between Matara and Pottuvil, through Hambantota, will also be rough, he said.

Bad weather warnings have been issued to hotels and tourists will be advised to avoid going out to sea today, said a spokesman for the Disaster Management Center. On Friday, strong winds damaged and destroyed 100 houses in Badulla, Haputale and Haldummulla.
