Road to Sigiriya a muddy mess

View(s):

Foreign visitors at the famed Sigiriya Rock have to wade through a muddy mess. Layers of mud and water extend from the road side shops, eating houses, trekking grounds, vehicle car parks and even the elephant safari route and together it paints a sad picture for both local and foreign visitors who come in their thousands to the area each day.

The regional authorities which is the Pradeshiya Sabha that is entrusted to maintain this world heritage site along with the Cultural Fund appears to be doing little or nothing as the muddy circus is allowed to go on day in and day out.

Tourists are charged larger fee for the thrills on offer at the site.

Barbara Rock, an Australian teacher who visited the place this week was dismayed at the scene which confronted her. “This is not what one sees on the tourist brochures that advertises this place. This is a rip-off and the authorities must do something fast to rectify the situation at the very earliest,” she said.

At the end of the day it only helps to put the image of the country in poor light, Ms. Rock further added.
