Royal College win D.S. Senanayake Trophy

Royal College cruised to a convincing 57 to 41 point win over S. Thomas’ College to retain the D.S. Senanayake Challenge Trophy for another year when they opposed each other in their Annual Under 19 Basketball fixture at Reid Avenue recently.

At the end of the first quarter the Royalists held a 14 to 11 point lead and at half time they were still ahead with 22 points to the Thomians 18.

Michael Alphonsus opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of play to give S. Thomas’ two points and an early lead. But two minutes later, Royal equalised and from there it was all Royal College. At the third quarter Royal College maintained their lead with 39 points to 25 and when no time was blown, the final tally was 57 to 41 and victory to Royal.

Sameera Chanaka with 23 points was the hero for Royal College, while Julian Gunasinghe 10 and Ashan Menuka nine were also on target.

For S. Thomas’ it was almost a one man show with Michael Alphonsus in cracking form with 20 points, while Naveen Pathirana chased him home with 11.

Michael Alphonsus was adjudged the best offensive player while Nipun Siriwardena and Sameera Chanaka both of Royal College won the special awards for the best defensive and most valuable players.
