Mayilankadu Gnanamurugan wears JFL KO crown

Gnanamurugan of Mayilankadu (Chunnakam) crowned themselves with glory. They won the Jaffna Football League’s Knockout Title

beating St. Nicholas, Navanthurai 3-0, in a tense final played on the Gurunagar Singing Fish Grounds, in front of a football crazy crowd. The match had all the ingredients of a classic duel.
After a goalless 1st half with both sides missing opportunities of scoring, the 2nd half turned to be more absorbing.
Firm favourites, Gnanamurugan opened scoring at the 56th minute with the fast moving right-in Jegatheese collecting a pass from the right flank and finding the net with a scorching drive.
With the infusion of adrenaline, Gnanamurugan kept their opponents guessing with their moves. They started dominating the rest of the play. Their “evergreen” right extreme S. Lestine increased the lead with a copy book kick which found the far right corner of the net.
The coup de grace was delivered by Segar, just before the long blast with a penalty kick making Gnanamurugan the worthy winners of the Jaffna Football League’s Knockout tournament for 2012.
The tournament itself had its element of sensationalism with the League’s champions St. Anthony’s, Pasaiyoor and the hot favourites for the knockout title, being eliminated in the quarter finals by Anaikkodai Union and Gurunagar Singing Fish, the league runners up being edged out by the eventual champions Mayilankadu Gnanamurugan by 5 goals to 4 in what everybody accepted as the best match of the season.
