Hockey Tournament that was conducted by the Matale Old Thomians Association (Colombo Branch) at the Police Park recently.After the game ended in a nil all draw, centre forward L.G. Weerasuriya fired the Golden Goal to give the Air Force a 1-0 win over Police.
With this victory, the Air Force have emerged champions in this tournament for the sixth time, while the Army who won the inaugural tournament in 1997 lead the tally with seven wins, while the Navy and CH and FC won it on one occasion. The tournament was not played in 2009 due to unavoidable circumstances.

Earlier, in the semi finals, a single goal by Heshan Fernando gave Police a 1-0 win over Navy, while in the second semi final, centre forward L.G. Weerasuriya gave the Air Force a berth in the final with a 1-0 win.

In the play off for the third place Sri Lanka Navy beat Wennappuwa 1-0 with a goal from left extreme K.D.S. Madubashi.

The champions, Air Force won the champions challenge trophy, a cash award of Rs. 20,000/-., the Police the runner-up trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-., while the Navy were also awarded a trophy and Rs. 10,000/-.

Replicas were also gifted to the players of all three teams.

D.W. Nalinda of the Air Force was adjudged the most outstanding player and Heshan Fernando of the Police won the award for the most disciplined player.

The final was refereed by Indika Jayawardena and Indrawansa Herath, while W.M.C. Dissanayake was the third official.The Chief Guest at the opening ceremony was Danpiya Wanasinghe the present principal and at the closing ceremony was Hayes Jayawardena, Attorney-at-Law and a distinguished old boy of St. Thomas’ College who gave away the awards.

This year too, the tournament was a tremendous success due to the untiring efforts of M. Ratnaharan and the dedicated members of the tournament committee. – BM
