The ministry of education and the ministry of sports have launched a joint plan to increase the number of Sports Schools from 18 to 25.

Within the next 2-3 weeks, the Principals of the sports schools which are now in operation will be called upon to hold a special discussions with regard to this matter at the Ministry of Education. Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Secretary, Ministry of Education Gotabaya Jayaratne and the secretary to the Ministry of Sports Anura Jayawickrama and Several other senior officials will participate in this meeting.

The responsibility of the Ministry of Education will be to make arrangements to develop one school in each Divisional Secretariat Division to the position of a sports school. The naming of such sports school will also be made by the Ministry of Education.

The students who show special talent in sports in that Divisional Secretariat Division will be eligible to enroll in that school.
The Ministry of sports, will bear the responsibility of developing the infrastructure facilities.
