‘I did not slap anybody’ - Yoshitha Rajapaksa

“I did not slap anybody at the Navy-Air Force match at Ratmalana on June 29. I did not even play in the game. I was on the bench and at the time the alleged incident took place I was not even wearing the Navy jersey,” said a surprised Yoshitha Rajapaksa when questioned about an incident which had occurred at the game in Ratmalana where Air Force suffered a 15-55 drubbing.

The Air Force team had not entered the field for about ten minutes after the interval. However the game resumed after match referee D. Nimal had requested the teams to get into the field. Apparently senior officials had intervened after an argument that had taken place during the half time and the match was continued.

It is alleged that Yoshitha Rajapaksa had slapped Air Force player Kurukulasuriyage Pradeep Chandimal (Kula), during the interval.
When ‘Kula’ was asked about the incident he said that nothing of the sort happened but there was an argument amongst players which was later resolved. “Sir (meaning Yoshitha) did not even take the field that day. There is some sort of a misunderstanding to say that ‘Sir” has slapped me,” he said.

’Kula’ has been playing rugby for the Air Force for the last ten years. He said that he had learnt his rugby at the Air Force and had not played school rugby.
