National Association of Fencing in Sri Lanka (NAF) said on Wednesday that it would host the inaugural National Fencing Championship on December 20 and 21 at the Unichela Fencing Club premises in Panadura.

This will be the first ever domestic competition to be hosted by the NAF since it was founded in 2008.

Kasuni Silva, the Secretary of NAF further elaborating on the development told the Sunday Times that, as the fencing governing body in Sri Lanka, it had conducted a number of behind-the-curtain activities prior to this big event.

“It has been four years since the NAF was established but we had to do a lot of promotions such as coaching and familiarization seminars etc before planning out a championship of this nature. We are happy to see that fencing has attracted nearly 100 competitors by today and all of them are taking part at the inaugural competition,” Silva stressed.

Despite taking its time to hold a tournament domestically, the NAF has produced fencers who had performed creditably at international competitions. The NAF, which is the registered governing body of fencing in Sri Lanka, is affiliated to the Federation Internationale D’Escrime (FIE), Commonwealth Fencing Federation (CFF), Fencing Confederation of Asia (FCA) and the South Asian Fencing Federation (SAFF). The NAF as at today has seven registered clubs registered under them with a population of nearly 100 fencers.

The NAF will award the best fencer with highest number of ‘culminative points’ in the pool and direct elimination rounds of the individual segment with the best fencer of the competition award. The fencing club to lead the medals tally of both individual and team events will be awarded with the championship trophy. The inaugural National Fencing Championship is a result of the hard work of Silva, Ushan Abeywickrema the President of NAF and the Chairman of Organising Committee Eranga Fonseka who had done numerous researches on how to conduct a competition of this nature with the help of the international governing bodies.
