‘Tourism Awards night’ sees giants make headway in tourism

The tourism industry’s main stake awards night saw industry giants and upcoming individuals walking away with the coveted Sri Lanka Tourism Awards 2011 key among them being the John Keells and Aitken Spence group of hotels.Sri Lanka Tourism Awards for 2011 were held against the Sigiriya backdrop with frescoes of a bygone era scaling the walls of the Water’s Edge with a vast number of travel industry professionals and veterans gathered to bag coveted trophies for achievements and contributions to the sector.

Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa said they were today focused on promotions and were readying to commence the marketing and promotions campaigns.He noted that Sri Lanka which was interested in the sustainability of the industry was asked to address the World Tourism Organisation’s meet on the same topic as well, highlighting the country’s importance in this regard.
Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena noted with concern the issues faced recently as in Yala and Tangalle and said they would always attempt to overcome these towards the benefit of the people at large.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to generating the highest revenue from this sector and expected to achieve a one million target for tourist arrivals this year. Other targets mentioned were the revenue for 2012 expected at US$980 million and by 2016 US$2, 500 million.
