Two senior journalists no more

Two senior journalists, Hemachandra Nanayakkara (80) and M. C. A. Hassan (81) passed away this week. Mr. Nanayakkara who died on Tuesday after a brief illness received his education at the Jaffna Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya while living with his businessman uncle in the northern capital. He was trilingual and began his professional career in 1955 as Jaffna Correspondent for the then ‘Times of Ceylon’ Group.

He was also a Provincial Correspondent for the Virakesari newspaper and then became Galle Group Correspondent for Lake House newspapers for many years, after which he joined Independent Newspapers Ltd., as a court correspondent for the Davasa, Sun and Weekend newspapers.

He was well known to a generation of judges and lawyers alike at Hulftsdorp and Galle.  A resident of Wanduramba, his remains were cremated at the Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha grounds. Meanwhile, M. C. A. Hassan (81), a one-time reporter at the Sun and Weekend newspapers and former Editor of Senate publications passed away on Thursday in Auckland, New Zealand.

He was a regular contributor to the Muslim Readers Digest and Voice of Islam in South Africa, and earlier to the Islamic Review of Woking Mosque in England. He was also a regular contributor of Islamic Religious talks to the Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation. His Janaza took place in Auckland on Friday.
