Hundred and eighty fatalities were reported from a total of 168 accidents during the course of last month, police said.  They claimed pedestrians were the cause of many of the accidents. Senior Police Superintendent (SSP) Chula de Silva of the City Traffic Division said yesterday pedestrians tended to ignore basic road rules and this often led to accidents even on less busy roads in the outstations”.

He urged pedestrians to use the pavements instead of the roads since this could prevent accidents. “Just like the motorists the pedestrians must also adhere to the road rules”, he said. He added that in recent months jay walkers were apprehended and even fined in courts.
