The 107th Big Match between Kingswood and Dharmaraja at Asgiriya Stadium was a dull, drab affair until midday yesterday. What generated the excitement was not some brilliant shot-making but the rapid fall of wickets.
Kingswood’s skipper Kasun Bandara with a determined, dedicated knock of 30 not out in 150 balls brought his team within sniffing distance of the first innings lead. But Deneth Lanka foiled his best efforts by bagging wickets at the other end. Kingswood perked up after snatching two early wickets and, at one stage, seemed to be heading for their first win since 1958. However Thanusha Weragoda dispelled all the fears, anxiety and gloom with some stacking shot-making. The match was called off with eight overs remaining.
Dharmaraja 133 all out (49) (Chandimal de Silva 27, Deneth Lanka 31, Deshan Gunasinghe 27, K. Ratnayake 24, Asanka Bandara 4/29, Tharindu Liyanage 4/31, Champika Aluvihare 2/21) and 80 for 7 wickets (40) (Thanusha Weragoda 32n.o, Chandimal de Silva 22, Tharindu Liyanage 4/22, Asanka Bandara 2/27)
Kingswood (64-4 overnight) 121 all out (73) (Tharindu Liyanage 39, Kasun Bandara 30n.o, P. Jayawickrama 15, D. Lanka 4/21, Nuwan Karunaratne 2/24)
