Favourites cruised away to easy wins as the Men’s Doubles reached its quarterfinal stage at the 45th National Carrom Championship, the first of national titles for 2013, which began at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) headquarters in Maharagama yesterday.

Today national player Mohamed Sherifdeen and M.T.M. Hilmi are set to face off Dimal Senaratne and Lahiru Perera in the first quarter-final of the Men’s Doubles while in its second clash the pairing of Charith Madushanka and Dilusha Dilrujith with meet Bradley Mathiasz and Upali Premachandra when play resumes for the second day.

Yesterday the 45th edition of the National Carrom Championship kicked off with the participation of nearly 350 slicers.

Sherifdeen and Hilmy were the first pair to reach the quarters when they got the better off Lalith Kumara and A.W.M. Ilham by 25 to 10 at the pre-quarterfinal. Their opponents in the quarters today, Senaratne and Perera handed Sashrika Muthunayake and Vinoj Ravindu a smashing 25 to 6 defeat and advanced to the next stage. In other pre-quarter-finals Madushanka and Dilrujith beat K.G.S.K. Prasad and W.M.A. Mufeez by 25 to 11 to take on Mathiasz and Premachandra who beat Ishan Kannangara and Pamod Ashan by 25 to 19.

Today the Men’s Double will reach the semi-final stage. Besides that the Women’s Doubles and Veterans’ Singles events are set to begin today and are set to reach its semi-final and third round stages respectively. The tournament will continue on four weekends with matches beginning from 9.00am each day before winding up on January 27 with the awards ceremony.
