It will be a celebration of Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, when two young talented Italians will bring his compositions to Colombo audiences at the concert, ‘Viva Vivaldi’ on September 5 at the Lionel Wendt.

Vivaldi is known for his ‘Gloria’ and the celebrated Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) and less for his other hundreds of concerti for a variety of instruments.

Paolo Tagliamento

Gordon Fantini

His music is made of vibrant rhythms, flowing melodies, pictorial instrumental effects and instrumental technique that would later inspire successive artists and epitomise Baroque music in general.

For the concert in Colombo organized by the Italian Embassy in cooperation with the Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC), the embassy has invited two soloists, playing the bassoon and violin, from the prestigious Conservatorio ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ of Milan.

The concert programme will include ‘The Four Seasons’ and two rare Bassoon compositions: Concerto in E minor and Concerto in G minor (RV 484 and RV 495).

The Four Seasons will be played by Paolo Tagliamento, a very young virtuoso, aged only 15, who due to his command and ability, has already affirmed himself as one of the most promising Italian violinists, having performed both in Italy and abroad.
Equally talented Gordon Fantini, 22, already First Bassoon at the ‘Cantar Settecento’ ensemble and the Respighi Quartet, will play the two Concerti for orchestra and bassoon.

The concert will be directed by guest conductor Leo Phillips, a former Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic and Leader of the renowned Nash Ensemble while the CMSC will be led by its Artistic Director and Concertmaster Lakshman Joseph de Saram.
Having already actively supported a number of charities in Sri Lanka, the Italian Embassy will donate all the money raised from the concert for the benefit of hearing-impaired children and the homeless elderly. The embassy is supported by HSBC, Access Group and Galle Face Hotel.
