Fair turnout, but monitors cry foul
A turnout of 55 to 65 percent was reported in the crucial and keenly-fought Eastern Provincial Council elections yesterday – but the polls were marred, especially, by alleged large-scale ballot rigging by the government ally, the Pillayan group in the final hours.

SOS plan for K'gala Employers, unions to meet on GSP+

Popular actor Ravindra Randeniya is about to light the traditional oil lamp at a heavily-attended ceremony. Amidst the smiling people, he suddenly clutches his chest and falls. While the adults look on in stunned inactivity, schoolchildren rush forward from the audience and one administers mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, shouting for someone to call 110.

Employers and trade unions are meeting on Tuesday, May 13 to discuss the GSP+ scheme which most stakeholders believe may not be extended by the European Union owing to reasons including non enforcement of some international conventions. The meeting called by the Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) comes just as trade unions begin to flex their muscles saying the government and the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF).....

In the land of the crooked The shame of Guantanamo Bay
It was just the other day while indulging in a rather serious chat about the state of affairs in present day cricket one person present suggested that the Samantha Algama saga could be termed as “Algate” and the perpetrator of the issue could be called the “Algator”. I was not only amused by the cleaver coining of a situation, but I decided that it also could be my catch line in my little conversation with you this week.
My youngest one is as old as the young son of Sami Al Hajj, the Al Jazeera cameraman who was carried home to freedom on a stretcher this week, after seven years in the Guantanamo Bay. Watching a shockingly emaciated Hajj shower kisses on his son at a Khartoum hospital, where he has been admitted after freedom from the high security prison in Cuba, I couldn't help think about my own kids.

IPL with SANGA INTERNATIONAL | New York
Torn muscle is my worry now US Feminists sharply divided ......
It has been a frustrating week for me and on Saturday night I’ll be watching The Kings XI Punjab take on the Chennai Super Kings from the dugout due to a torn muscle in my side. I’m very disappointed as I have been really enjoying this IPL and I was getting into my best form. No constituency is more eager to see a woman win the presidency than America's feminists, yet - despite Hillary Rodham Clinton's historic candidacy - the women's movement finds itself wrenchingly divided over the Democratic race as it heads toward the finish.

Howzzat! 'King Javaka Chandrabhanu'
Celebrities, stacks of cash, massive crowds, eye-candy cheerleaders with barely-there outfits, and even more celebrities… Sounds like the infamous Super Bowl, right? Wrong! It's the much hyped Indian Premier League (IPL) Cricket .......
With the passage of time, Polonnaruwa became almost another Kerala. Kalinga Magha was not satisfied even with all that. He brought more and more armies from abroad. Most of them were mercenaries. This cruel ruler had a commander, just like himself.
