Walala Rathnayake to the fore again

Walala Rathnayake MV Kandy has been dominating the athletic scene in recent times and there was no difference at the Relay Carnival worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. It was the first day of the meet and five finals were worked off from which Walala Rathnayake MV Kandy managed to win three events and came third in one event.

The meet is jointly organized by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka and the Schools Athletics Association.

Walala Rathnayake MV athletes dished out good running skills. A striking feature from the five finals worked off yesterday was that all events were won by outstation schools. Colombo schools were not even in the first three places. Colombo schools managed to redeem some lost prestige thanks to St.Benedict’s College who came in second in the Boys under 20 4 x 800 meters relay event.

In the most senior event of the day were the Boys under 20 4 x 800 meters final Walala Rathnayake MV Kandy came in first with a timing of 7:57.19 seconds. The second place went to St. Benedict’s College with a timing of 8:19.81 seconds while Vidyartha College Kandy came in third with a timing of 8:21.04 seconds.

In the boys under 18 4 x 800 meters event Vidyartha College Kandy came in first with a timing of 8:31.99 seconds. With a time of 8:37. 23 Ambagamuwa MV Ambagamuwa won second place. In third place was Walala Rathnayake MV Kandy with a timing of 8:44.09.
Walala Rathnayake MV Kandy who returned a time of 10:07.75 came in first in the Girl’s under 18 4 x 800 meters event.

Finishing the race with a timing of 10:25.71 seconds Poramadulla CC Rikillagaskada were placed second. Sumana BMV Ratnapura took third place with a timing of 10:46.28 seconds.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka will celebrate World Athletics Day with an athletic meet will be worked off on May 17th(Next Saturday) at the Torrington grounds.The chief guest will be the Director General of Sports Mr D.B.Dahanayake
