Handsome win for Royal

Twenty nine points (2 goals, 3 tries) to nil as Royal won over Vidyartha at Nittawela yesterday. But the score-line doesn’t do justice to Vidyartha's efforts, especially in the second half.

The selfishness of the centre who refused to pass to the unmarked winger on one occasion, and a missed pass by the winger with an open field in front of him cost them dearly. Royal, too could have added a try or two. However, their knock ons were plentiful. Royal, wisely, played with their forwards. When the ball was thrown around, Vidyartha looked decidedly nippier.

A brilliant break and a forty yard run down the flank ended in a try by prop Nikira Senanayake. Another dashing effort from mid field resulted in centre Shamil Ahamed snatching the ball off a team mate and storming ahead to touch down. Chandrasekara's conversion made it 12-0 at the break.

Winger Duminda Attiygala scored a dandy try by slicing through the defence in their 22. Royal scored twice more in the last ten minutes. Both were push over efforts off short taps and were scored by Hasthika Bandaranaike (number eight) and lock Kalana Amarasinghe.

Referee: A.C. Tennekoon
Under 16: Royal 5 Vidyartha 5
