The healing power of Ayurveda

By Madhushala Senaratne

We live in a stressful world. Be it at home or work, most of us are caught up in the rat-race and hardly have time for relaxation. Stress can lead to a host of ailments but Ayurveda could pave the way to a healthier life."Ayurveda is not merely a treatment, it is a philosophy," says Dr. Vasantha Kuruneru, who has established the 'Euro Veda Lanka', an Ayurvedic hospital in Panadura just over two months ago.

Upon arrival, visitors to the hospital are offered herbal tea as a form of relaxation and after the treatment they are given a light meal as they could feel hungry. The treatment rooms are clean and airy and there is a separate place for yoga and meditation. The doctors at the Euro Veda Lanka are registered with the Ayurveda Ministry and trained by Dr. Kuruneru who has obtained his degree from Germany and worked there for over 15 years.

"Apart from Ayurvedic treatment there is also a Western medical consultant," Dr. Kuruneru explains. Ayurveda is a holistic system of curative and preventive medicine, focusing on the prevention of disease through a deeper connection between the mind and the body. Ayurvedic medicine is developed from human experiences that have been proven to be effective.

"We treat any form of disease or illness," says Dr. Kuruneru. However, he explains that the side-effects of Ayurvedic treatment, or any treatment for that matter, cannot be completely ignored or overlooked.

Euro Veda Lanka also offers Ayurvedic beauty care, medicine, education and health care information. There are also various kinds of massages offered by the hospital including whole body, head, facial, neck back and shoulder and foot that help reduce body aches, pains and relax the muscles. The amount of time spent on each treatment may vary, but on average it usually takes about one and a half hours, Dr. Kuruneru says.

In addition, visitors are also offered full-day Ayurvedic treatment which helps you renew and rejuenate your mind, body and soul. The treatment, which lasts for about six hours includes, refining body mask, facial massage, foot massage, body polish and head massage.

Today we are so accustomed to modern drug treatment that we have forgotten the importance of releasing our body's own healing powers. Without this force our bodies would remain in a state of disease. Ayurvedic treatment helps you lead a healthier life says Dr. Kuruneru, who believes that it is necessary for us to seek such treatment on a regular basis.
