The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) continues to set benchmarks in higher education through the BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying degree, delivered under a franchise agreement with the prestigious Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), United Kingdom. The latest milestone in this remarkable journey is the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation, a global recognition that reaffirms the programme’s academic rigor, professional relevance, and international standing.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a globally recognised professional organisation headquartered in the United Kingdom, responsible for setting and enforcing the highest international standards in the built environment sector. RICS accreditation can be considered as a benchmark of “gold standard” in quantity surveying and construction education. Graduates from RICS-accredited programmes are recognised worldwide, gaining access to membership routes leading to the coveted MRICS chartered status, which opens global career opportunities in construction, cost consultancy, and project management.
SLIIT is now one of the few regional universities with RICS-accredited degrees, offering improved global mobility and a route to chartered professional status. It is a testament to the Department’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and the highest industry standards.
In another remarkable achievement, the SLIIT QS Department recently launched the SLIIT BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying degree, which proudly stands as the first-ever non-state sector QS programme in Sri Lanka to secure full approval from the Ministry of Education. This landmark approval testifies to the Department’s academic strength, governance, and commitment to producing competent graduates who meet both national and international standards
Together, the RICS accreditation and Ministry of Education recognition demonstrate the Department’s position as a pioneering force in shaping the future of Quantity Surveying education in Sri Lanka.
At the heart of this success lies SLIIT’s best in-house academic staff of any non-state Quantity Surveying degree programme in Sri Lanka, comprising a dynamic blend of seasoned academics, chartered quantity surveyors, and engineers. Their collective expertise ensures that our students are nurtured not just as graduates, but as future-ready professionals who can thrive in both local and international construction environments.
Complementing the permanent staff is an exceptional fleet of visiting lecturers, drawn from leading state sector universities and top-tier industry organisations. This integration of academia and practice creates a learning environment that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply connected to the realities of the profession.
The SLIIT QS degree offers a truly international learning experience, with students from several countries joining the programme regularly. Collaborative learning takes place alongside foreign students and academics, allowing cross-cultural knowledge exchange and exposure to global best practices.
Our partnership with LJMU ensures that the programme content aligns with global standards while remaining relevant to the Sri Lankan and regional context. Students also enjoy opportunities to transfer to LJMU for their final year or pursue postgraduate scholarships directly through the University, broadening their global mobility and career prospects.
The Department’s close ties with the construction industry are central to our curriculum design and continuous development. Regular Industry Consultative Board meetings, guest lectures, and joint workshops ensure that our graduates possess the latest skills in digitalization, sustainability, and contract administration.
Students benefit from state-of-the-art measurement and digital quantity surveying laboratories, equipped with industry-standard software such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and On-Screen Take-off (OST). This exposure empowers them to become proficient in emerging technologies while remaining grounded in core QS principles.
Our 12-week industrial training programme is another distinctive feature that bridges the gap between academia and real-world practice, enabling students to gain invaluable exposure to live construction projects and industry workflows.
Beyond academics, SLIIT offers a vibrant, fully-fledged university environment, complete with modern lecture theatres, collaborative study spaces, research labs, counselling and English help desks, and active student societies. Students are encouraged to engage in multidisciplinary projects alongside peers from engineering, architecture, and management disciplines, creating a rich collaborative learning ecosystem.
Our graduates embody professionalism, ethical conduct, and adaptability, traits that make them highly sought-after in Sri Lanka and abroad. Many SLIIT QS alumni are now employed across the Middle East, the UK, and Australia, serving as proud ambassadors of Sri Lankan academic excellence.
As we look ahead, SLIIT remains steadfast in its mission: to produce globally competent, ethically grounded Quantity Surveyors who lead change and build the future of the construction industry.
