Government addressing all concerns on education reforms: Deputy Min
View(s):The first phase of the module-based education system will commence for Grades 1 -2 and Grades 6-7 starting from 2026, Deputy Minister of Education Madhura Senevirathna said.
This will be the first phase of education reforms undertaken by the National People’s Power (NPP) government.
The curriculum reforms, effective from January, will also include classroom periods of 50 minutes with total school time extended by 30 minutes. The extra half hour will push school closing time to 2 pm from the current 1.30 pm.
Deputy minister Senevirathna said this change in time slots is to allow students more activity based engagement in classrooms.
He said concerns that the extra half hour of school will affect transport of students have been taken into consideration, and bus and train services will be rescheduled to suit the new hours.
Discussions have also been held with school bus/van operators and they too will adjust their timetable accordingly, he said.
Trade union concerns over extra work for teachers too are being addressed, he added. “There was a demand that teachers be paid over time for the extra half an hour. We are part of the discussions as well,” he said.
The objectives of the reforms, he said, are to enhance curriculum relevance and quality, improve learning outcomes, increase enrolment in science and technology streams, promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and citizenship education, foster 21st century skills, ensure equity and inclusivity, strengthen school-community relationships, align with National Educational Goals (NEGs) and promote entrepreneurial mindset.
The Education Ministry and related authorities have begun awareness programmes on the proposed reforms and training programmes for teachers, the deputy minister added. -DWI
