Skanda Shasti festival celebrates the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Soorapadman, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
The festival, which lasts for six days, marks the concluding battle where Murugan defeated the demons Surapadman, Tarakasura and Simhamukha, symbolising the victory of good over evil. It is primarily celebrated to honour this triumph, which is believed to have occurred on the sixth day (Shashti Thithi) of the waxing moon in the month of Karthikai.
MYTHOLOGICAL ORIGIN
The origin story is detailed in the Skanda Purana, one of the major Puranas in Hinduism. It states that the gods, harassed by powerful demons like Soorapadman, sought help from Lord Shiva. Lord Murugan was born from Lord Shiva’s divine energy to defeat the demons.
THE BATTLE BETWEEN LORD MURUGA AND DEMON SOORAPADMAN
Lord Murugan fought and ultimately defeated the demon Soorapadman, on the sixth day of the festival. During the battle, Murugan split Soorapadman into two parts: a peacock, which became his mount (vahana), and a rooster, which became the emblem on his flag.
SYMBOLIC MEANING OF THE STORY
The story is not just a historical event but also a spiritual allegory for overcoming inner demons, negative thoughts, and obstacles to achieve enlightenment.
CELEBRATION 
The festival is celebrated with a six-day fast and rituals that culminate on the final day, known as Soorasamharam.
Devotees often fast, worship Lord Murugan and visit temples to participate in the festivities, to receive blessings for prosperity, growth, and protection.
