No new invention should be abandoned, Minister of Science and Technology Chrishantha Abeysena said, and highlighted the importance of establishing a more organised network to promote innovations.

He was speaking at a meeting held at the Ministry of Science and Technology on Thursday to appreciate twin students Sasiru Nimnal and Ramiru Nimnath of Vidyadeepa Maha Vidyalaya, Katukeliyawa, Anuradhapura, who created a robot using artificial intelligence technology.

The purpose of the meeting was to explore the support and guidance the ministry can provide for these students, including further development of their creation.

“I appreciate the talent of these children. We are ready to provide all the necessary support for the future development of their creation,” he said.

“There may be a large number of children with such talents and abilities. An efficient programme is being prepared to identify and develop those abilities, covering all fields. The establishment of 100 school innovation clubs this year is one step in that direction,” he said.

He said the programme to establish school innovation clubs will be gradually expanded to cover the entire school system over the next few years.

“We also look forward to connecting them with universities. Efforts are underway to identify innovation opportunities, take them forward, and promote commercialisation and production opportunities. To achieve this, steps are being taken to bridge the gap between innovators and the authorities that provide the necessary facilities,” he said.

Representatives from the Arthur C Clarke Institute, the Inventors Commission, and the National Innovation Agency expressed their readiness to provide technical assistance and guidance for the further development of this innovation.

They also pledged their support for obtaining patent rights for the creation as a new product. The students who spoke at the event stated that the robot was the result of continuous hard work, dedication, and experimentation, and that it was developed using artificial intelligence and robotics technology.

They said their goal is to develop this humanoid robot into a tourist guide, and thanked the ministry for recognising their innovation. They also conveyed their expectation of continued support from the government and relevant institutions for their future initiatives.
