The Ministry of Higher Education and Vocational Education has sent a reminder to education institutions and schools that additional costs for the use of water would have to be borne by schools.

The initial circular on payments for the water supplied to schools was issued and effective on January 1, but the circular has been re-circulated by the ministry as a reminder.

According to the circular, a student of a school or a privena, an academic or non-academic staff member’s daily water requirement is measured as 20 liters. A 20 day period is considered a month and a monthly usage is calculated as 400 liters. Using this calculation, the school’s monthly water consumption is calculated and borne by the government.

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board had mentioned the amount of the water bill borne by the government as state contribution, while if there is an excess it would be indicated as extra charges to the school.

According to the circular on school water bill payments, the Education Ministry would bear the government contribution of national schools while the provincial education ministry would handle the government contribution of provincial schools.

However, the water bill which comes under the extra charges to the school is required to be paid through the school development committee while the piriven are required to pay the bills via Piriven development fund or grants provided to them. If the school or privena only received a bill with government contribution they are not required to pay the bill themselves as the government bears the expense.

Further details on school water bill payment, as well as water supply connection related matters, are available on the Education Ministry websites. (KW)
