Thirty Lankan students who are recipients of fully-funded scholarships to undertake higher education at institutes in China were feted at a ceremony held this week.

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka held an award ceremony for the 2025-2026 academic years for the Chinese Government Scholarship.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madura Seneviratne who was present at the event thanked the Chinese government’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s educational development through scholarship programmes.

This year’s scholarships cover a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, medicine, and agriculture, providing critical support for cultivating multidisciplinary talent in Sri Lanka, he said.

Some of the recipients of the scholarship will attend prestigious institutes such as the Shanghai University and the Science Academy in China.

He said that Sri Lanka, too, is awarding scholarships to Chinese students to study here as part of a reciprocal programme.

Sri Lanka will also be discussing with provincial authorities in China to increase the number of Lankan students who can obtain scholarships.

Around 100 placements have been agreed to so far, he said, and in return an equal number of Chinese students will come to study here.

He added that Sri Lanka was also seeking placement at the Huawei ITC Academy for Lankan students.

He expressed the hope that the students studying in China will diligently pursue their studies and form bridges of cooperation between the two countries upon their return.

Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong congratulated the scholarship-winning students, and encouraged them to cherish the opportunity to study in China, aspire to use their knowledge to contribute to Sri Lanka’s development, and serve as ambassadors of friendship between China and Sri Lanka.
