Government will suspend the import of 90-Octane petrol and import only 92-Octane with effect from January, Petroleum Resources Minister Anura Priyadharsahana Yapa said. He said that one of the reasons was that the international market does not have 90-Octane.

‘This will be the standard, and even Lanka Indian Oil company will be told to follow the same practice,” he said. The minister said the reduction of vehicle emissions and importing of fuel which suits new vehicles, will be one of the objectives.“We will introduce it at the same price, while absorbing the loss,” he added .

“Currently, 92-Octane is freely available in the international market, and if we were to purchase 90-Octane, the supplier will have to reconvert 92-Octane to provide 90-Octane, which can reduce the quality of the fuel,” he said.
