Southern Education minister orders probe on trouser-slitting teacher

The Southern Province Minister of Education Chandima Rasaputra has directed the Zonal Director of Weligama to inquire into an incident where a female teacher had slit a trouser of a male student saying it was tight and should not be worn to school. The student had said it was the only trouser he had.

The incident occurred at the Denipitiya Maha Vidyalaya in Weligama. “The teacher has caused mental trauma to the student by punishing him in an embarrassing way in front of students. Depending on the inquiry, disciplinary action will be taken against the teacher,” Mr Rasaputara said .

The teacher in charge of Physical Education had taken a pair of scissors and slit the trouser in front of other students during the morning exercise session.  The student Janith Imalka, of grade 11 lost his mother when he was young and lives with his father , a daily wage labourer and sister.

“My brother came home crying that his only trouser was slit open and that he has no other trouser to wear during the year-end exams. My brother wasrefusing to go to school,” M.Deepika said. The Principal who had taken the trouser had reportedly refused to hand it back to the family.

Later it was handed over to the Police on a directive by the Senior Superintendent of Police of Matara, Deshabandu Tennakoon.
