REV. FR. TRAVIS GABRIAL

On April 4, 2019, the Josephian family bid farewell to the 13th Rector of St Joseph’s College, Colombo 10, Rev Fr Travis Jude Gabriel. He served St Joseph’s College as Rector for five years.

His retirement ended three decades of dedicated and committed service in education. He rendered a yeoman service to the nation as an illustrious educationist. His service of 33 long years in education is commendable and laudable.

I came to know him on the day of my priestly ordination. As I was appointed to the staff of St Joseph’s College, Fr Travis congratulated me and wished me all the very best in my priestly mission.

Fr Travis is a man who leads an exemplary, virtuous life. He is a champion in listening; I would say he has mastered the art of listening. Whenever someone comes seeking his company in times of pain and trouble, he is always there to listen to them. He will never get tired of listening to anyone. His patient listening is sure to have healed the wounds of many souls.

Fr Travis is a true shepherd who guides and leads his flock on the correct path. In his mission as the Rector, he was the epitome of a true good shepherd/leader. He guided the tutorial staff, the non-academic staff and the students to greener pastures. A good shepherd is always there for his flock. Fr Travis is ever-so-ready and willing to help the flock entrusted to him. His eagerness in extending a helping hand is praiseworthy.

“Actions speak louder than words.” He practices what he preaches. He is a man of principles. I still remember the contentious 82nd Battle of the Saints, the Big Match between St Joseph’s College and St Peter’s College, Colombo 4. He awarded the victory to St Peter’s College, teaching a lesson on the spirit of sportsmanship and the true spirit of the game of Cricket. “Win at any cost” was not in his blood. He prefers that all give their best when the best is needed, and to enjoy the game. The following morning, the print and electronic media hailed his authentic gesture.

Dear Fr Travis you are truly a man of God, a man of principles and a man who leads a very exemplary virtuous life. Your way of life inspires all of us. We wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. May God Bless You!

Rev Fr Milan Bernard
