Samutthana (The King’s College London Resource Centre for Trauma, Displacement and Mental Health) presents an evening of provocative discussion and debate on depression and suicide, moderated by Nivendra Uduman (Counselling Psychologist, Samutthana) on Wednesday, January 20 at the Bougainvillea Room, Hotel Galadari from 6.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.

The discussion will explore the realities of depression and suicide through the lens of a survivor as she tells the audience her story, along with a panel of experts sharing their views – led by Dr Mahesan Ganesan (Consultant Psychiatrist, National Institute of Mental Health).

The sufferer of depression is bound by his/her own thoughts. Listening to Diana’s Story, to what she has gone through, and how she has with the greatest difficulties managed her issues, will throw light on a more optimistic path of recovery.

Insights generated will empower the sufferer to break free from what seems like iron chains. The expert panel discussions and support should prove to be liberating as it offers a new perspective to one’s way of thinking.

Stigma and shame contribute to such issues being swept under the carpet and there is often a wall of silence around those who experience depression, as well as families who have lost their loved ones to suicide.

It is time to break out of this cycle of silence and suppression and speak about these issues openly to provide strength and hope to those living with mental health problems, as well as their families and caregivers.

Let’s educate ourselves on the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide, so that we can all collectively work towards the promotion of improved mental health and well-being in our families and communities.

All are welcome. Entrance is Rs. 1000. For reservations please call Dushy Parakrama on 077 6565 201 or Fawziya Ashroff –tel: 011 2883 847)
