The six months Foundation Course leading to the Edexcel Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business is being described as a blessing by the students enrolling in this programme. Shehan Ranatunga who enrolled on the HND Foundation after having done Maths for his A Levels said, ‘I had a lot of doubt whether I will be able to cope-up with HND modules as I had never done Business Studies. The moment I heard about this course, I was relieved and the next day I enrolled myself. The briefing I got at HRMI was super and all my anxiety was settled. The confidence I got from my academic coach at HRMI makes me believe that I should have no issues with the course and its assignments’

The Foundation in Business Studies leading to Edexcel HND is only conducted at HRMI to provide a solid orientation to students planning to start the HND. The Foundation syllabus will touch-upon most of the modules covered in the HND in order to enable students to familiarise themselves with the subject content and assessment methodology. Mr. Gamini Lokuge, a parent was spoke to the media said, ’this foundation course will enormously benefit students who have done Maths, Bio-science or Arts for their Advanced Level. These students always have their worries about coping up with Business or Management related subjects. This Foundation Course will provide plenty of familiarisation on the Edexcel curricular and assessment methodology’.

Ms. Kumudika Balasuriya, HND lecturer at HRMI said; ‘There are no examinations in the HND. Instead every module is assessed with an assignment. During the Foundation stage students will undergo specialised training on fulfilling assignment requirements and will have plenty of opportunities to do practice assignments. This training will settle the fears students often have when doing assignments for the first time’. During the Foundation stage, students will be provided with study packs and text books used at the HND stage in order to enable them to familiarise with the subject matter. There will be 6 units during the Foundation stage. These will include; Principles of Management, Business Environment, Organizations Behaviour, Marketing Principles, Human Resource Management and Managing Communications.

The Foundation course will be held on Saturdays and on completion students have a choice of pursuing the HND either on a Full-time or a Part-time basis. At HRMI students are provided with Internship Training in order to facilitate appropriate employment. Internship training is arranged by HRMI with major companies where good HR management practices are in place. Part time students have the opportunity of participating in the internship training programme whist pursuing their HND and full-time students can opt for a transfer to part time programme to undergo internship training or avail themselves of the opportunity on completion of the HND.
