The Rotary Club Kandy brings Musical Theatre for the first time

The Rotary Club of Kandy will once again make history by their efforts to help society and this time by joining hands with Yohanka School of Speech, Drama and Performing Arts and organizing a “Musical Theatre in aid of charity projects. The event will take place on 7 September 2013 ; 5.00 pm. at the Dharmaraja College Auditorium

The musical extravaganza will have different facets bringing Western and Eastern songs from the 70s, 80s and the 90’s presented by talented students together with modern dance performances, Choir and Spectacular modern Drumming Fusion.

Yohanka Jayasuriya who is chairing the project is a London Qualified Speech and Drama teacher whose students are trained for the examinations in Trinity Guild Hall (TCL), London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA), Colombo Academy of Language Skills & Dramatic Art (CALSDA), Institute of English, Music & Speech( IEMS).

Yohanka Jayasuriya joined hands with music composer, lyricist and song writer Pradeep Anthony and leading Choir Master Neson George to train the Choir.

The Musical Theatre is presented by many schools in Kandy including Colombo International School, Dharmaraja College, Good Shepherd Convent, Hillwood College, Gateway College, St. Sylvester’s College, St. Anthony’s College, Vidyartha College, Mahamaya College, Girl’s High School, Kingswood College, Green Hill International School and Trinity College.

Rotary Club of Kandy is a member of the Rotary International that has the district honour of being feted with a permanent seat at the United Nations in recognition of its continued development role in promoting peace throughout the world. Some of the recent projects conducted by Rotary Club of Kandy were:

Revolving Micro Loan Programme which has to date benefited over 900 underprivileged families with a loan pay out of over Rs. 59 Million.

Provision of 183 19 Ft. Fiber Glass Fishing Boats with Engines & Nets to the Tsunami affected at a value of over Rs. 70 Million.
Support for 21 Orphanages in the East Coast at a project budget of Rs.30 Million

Infrastructure development at the Dodanwela Deaf, Dumb & Blind Children s Home at a cost of Rs. 10 Million.

Establishment of the Centre for Handicapped at Kundasale which now provides over 1,000 Artificial Limbs to poor physically handicapped persons each year Rs. 41 Million.

Provision of Equipment to Emergency Care and Paediatric Units, Automatic Blood Analyzers, Ventilators, Monitors, Oral Cancer Screening Mobile Units, Eye Glasses, Hearing Aids, Lasers, Fundus Cameras and a range of other Health Care related equipment to the Government Hospitals at Kandy and Peradeniya Rs. 65 Million Provision of clean water to underprivileged locations/schools -Rs. 51 Million.

The main sponsors for this event are “ Sun Aqua “ & “ Soorya”. The proceeds of the Musical Theatre will go to charity apart from the fulfillment of the other objective of Rotary Club to set the stage for talented musicians to perform and be selected for future programs for different audiences elsewhere in the country.

Musical Theatre is expected to be a spring board for those who wish to make Music their career. It is the intention of the Rotary Club to make this an annual event thus expanding young talent its potential to reach out to other countries in the future.
