The University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) has introduced an ICT Basics Course by the name Foundation in Information Technology (FIT) for students that have passed the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination and not had the opportunity of entering a university as an internal student and with an aptitude for the ICT sphere. Students successfully completing this course will be eligible to enrol for the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree Programme of the UCSC. Students who have sat for this year’s G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination this year and students that have passed the examination in previous years are eligible to register themselves for this Course and the UCSC is in the process of recruiting new students for this course.

FIT (Foundation in Information Technology) is a certification programme about the Information Technology competency for school leavers who wish to continue their studies or find a suitable employment as knowledge workers. IT develops ICT competence together with English and Mathematical knowledge required to apply ICT in a working environment. Irrespective of your stream of study in ALs, this programme will help you to prepare for higher education after A/Ls or to find suitable employment as a knowledge worker. “ICT Applications”, “ICT for English” and “ICT for Mathematics” are three courses offered under FIT programme. The speciality of the FIT programme is that one does not need to pass A/Ls in order to follow it.

Once you register for the FIT programme, you will receive access to online learning materials and will be able to connect with other learners and online facilitators. FIT Virtual Learning Environment (http://fit.bit.lk/vle) contains self-learning interactive e-learning lessons for all FIT courses. However, if you find it difficult to learn without assistance of teachers, you can attend classes at private teaching institutes or you can get assistance from the NODES centres of your district to follow the course. National Online Distance Education Service (NODES) are centres under the Ministry of Higher Education and they have very good computing facilities together with high speed Internet access. Anyone could use these NODES centres at a reasonable cost and they provide assistance to follow the FIT programme. FIT exams are online e-Tests conducted at the UCSC testing centre (Colombo) and NODES centre located Island wide and these exams will be held every month depending on the demand. When you are ready, you can take the test of all or selected courses. Students, who complete all e-Tests successfully, will be able to register for the BIT External Degree (http://www.bit.lk) at the University of Colombo irrespective of you’re A/L results. Students who successfully complete all practical tests of FIT programme will receive the FIT certificate issued by the University of Colombo School of Computing. The FIT registration fee is Rs. 2500/= The registered students will receive access to online e-Learning materials to start the courses
