“My passion for fashion started when I was very little with a great liking for rainbow colours with small pastels in my hands. As I grew I started liking different coloured dresses with intriguing detailing and patterns, and always wanted to dress with matching colours’ used to admire all the clothes of celebrities in Hollywood and eventually started match making my own pieces of garments according to the designer collections’ on the internet. Moreover, my mum used to stitch creative garments for me and I grew a big fascination in wanting to stitch and wear my own garments. Therefore, in order to fulfill my dream in designing clothes and stitching them, I joined Lanka Institute of fashion Technology.

LIFT was the place my career first started, by drawing sketches of objects. People always told me a designers job is only to sketch but the real feeling could only be acknowledged once you enter the doors of a fashion school. Fashion is not only about getting an inspiration and drawing sketches, it consists of stitching, fabric designing, manipulations and the best aspect above all is the satisfaction you gain when you see the final garment beautifully strolling the ramp. The projects we do at LIFT are always interesting and gives us more exposure by taking us to factories, batik centers and printing places in the form of field trips. In addition to that, LIFT consists of a very friendly culture with professional but very kind lecturers so the fascination to learn designing keeps on increasing. Moreover, inside the design institute, creative and fun events are being organized and they give us the freedom to come up with our own ideas in different aspects.

So far, I have done 2 fashion shows with the help of my tutors of which one was the ‘Camouflage’ 2013 fashion show where it was a big success and a great experience as we had to work with Sri Lankan army. However, along with the experience I have gained throughout my 2 years at LIFT I have come to the final stage of my design course where I will be graduating in November, 2013. Therefore, I’m currently in the construction stage of the garments as my designs have been selected and these final months are really exciting, fun and intense at the same time because we have a lot of work going on simultaneously.

Furthermore, we are hoping to bring out a unique and splendid fashion show by the end of November, so all of you who are in love with fashion and think that fashion plays a big role in your life as that is one thing that makes you happy the most should come and experience our fashion show as I’m pretty sure your liking for fashion will end up in an obsession of being a designer.” Nishadi Gurusinghe (final year fashion student)
