All arrangements have been set in place to conduct the Sigiriya Rally Cross for the fifth consecutive year at the picturesque circuit of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), which combines both tarmac and gravel tracks.

The organisers of the event, SLAF, have slotted May 12 as the race day, following practice and qualifying sessions on the previous day.
According to the organisers this year the objective of hosting the competition is not only to give the participants a unique experience but also to give the spectators an unforgettable day fill with excitement.

The SLAF track in Sigiriya, which oversees the picturesque and historic Sigiriya rock, is designed with both rally and obstacle courses which make it a more demanding meet and will enthrall spectators as well.

“This track not only tests the speed but also puts to test the skills of the riders and drivers based on their experience and technique. The tarred stretch of the track requires the drivers and riders to manoeuvre their vehicles at high speed. However manoeuvring their vehicles on the gravel section of the track requires precision technique and skill derived from sheer experience. This form of motor racing is certain to be a challenging experience for motor racing enthusiasts in the country, whilst enticing more spectators to attend these events and will no doubt help motor racing in the country,” SLAF spokesman Shiraz Jaldin said.

According to him many talented competitors including the top ranked riders and drivers from the country have already registered for the Sigiriya Rally Cross 2013, taking the total number of competitors to over 200. SLAF will have the assistance of the newly-formed Sri Lanka Autosport and Drivers Association (SLADA), which includes renowned motor racing personalities.

SLAF and SLADA will have the backing of sponsors such as People’s Bank, Bank of Ceylon, Ceat tyres, Singer, Hero Abans, Airtel, Brandtel, Cargills and Kik Cola. – NA
