Who would have thought green vegetables could be so alluring? Former Miss India Puja Gupta has become the latest celebrity to endorse vegetarianism with her entry in the ‘lettuce-ladies club’ of the global animal rights organisation People for Ethical Treatment to Animals (PETA).

Leafy lovely: Former Miss India Puja Gupta makes an appeal for the vegetarian way of life

Puja, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film Go Goa Gone, a zombie comedy co-produced by Saif Ali Khan, is seen on the campaign poster wearing an outfit made entirely of lettuce leaves and other vegetables, with the catchphrase ‘Let Vegetarianism Grow on You’.

The short frilly lettuce dress with decorative linings of red cabbage is the brainchild of fashion designing student Namrata Thole, whose design surpassed several others in the race in a lettuce dress design contest organised by Peta. Puja will also actively participate in Peta’s campaign to spread the message of vegetarianism. In the past, several international celebrities have donned the lettuce outfit to spread the word on vegetarianism and veganism.

In 2009, Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, too, posed in a bikini made of lettuce leaves, with the tagline ‘Turn over a new leaf! Try vegetarian’. Among vegetarianism’s Indian faces, former Mrs India Aditi Govitrikar became the first desi celebrity to don the lettuce outfit in 2007.

Former Miss Universe Lara Dutta was chosen as the face of Peta’s ‘Go Vegan’ campaign in 2010, modelling a full-length lettuce gown designed by Gavin Miguel.
