Test cricket is considered the ultimate proving ground for any team looking to attach its name to immortality. Yet Sri Lanka’s most potent bowling weapon, Lasith Malinga, opted to withdraw from this traditional form of the game due to injury concerns. With the two Tests of the New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka inching ever closer, The Sunday Times chose to quiz the public as to whether the pace ace should return to Test cricket, and strengthen the Lankan team with his prodigious skill.

Yes he should play because he is a renowned player and Sri Lanka needs such bowlers. Even many players in our (Bangladesh) team had injuries but they came back. And he is such a good player that he should be able to overcome any problems he has. - Ahmed (Bangladeshi national)

He should play Test cricket. In a Test cricket match the longer bowlers play, the more confident they become, which is good for the team in the long run. - Chaminda Nanayakkara (Company employee)

I think he should play Test cricket because he changes the pattern of our bowling. He is special and he can bring some change. - Dharshana Wettasinghe (Assistant Director) Dharshana Wettasinghe (Assistant Director)

He should play Test cricket because he has been doing well. The only problem is that he is kind of in a ditch at the moment, but he should be okay because he is a very good bowler and he has very good variety. It all depends on how he performs. Sometimes we don’t see consistency in his performance. - Dilan Jayasundara (Management Accountant)

I don’t think he should play. He is not fit. With his bowling action he is sure to get more injuries if he plays Test cricket. - Fazil Marija (Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens Captain and Kandy SC star)

He should definitely play Test cricket. Considering his ability I think he should be in both Test and One Day squads. He is an essential player for the team and it will enhance the strength of the team. - H. Gunawardena (Trishaw driver)

He is one of the best bowlers in our team. After Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga is the best fast bowler our team had. I think he should play Test cricket. He shouldn’t retire from Test cricket but play while having temporary halts. - Mohamed Minhaj (Cafe employee)

He is only interested in playing in IPL matches. He doesn’t care about the team and that was evident at the last T20 world cup match. His best performances are in IPL matches. He is a good player and it is good if he can play Test cricket too. I think the reason why he doesn’t play Test cricket is because he gets paid less in Test cricket. - N. Herath (Security officer)

According to my opinion I think he is good for One Day matches. His performance in One Day matches is good. When he plays in Test matches he gets exhausted and had he continued to play in Test matches his performance would have become weaker. - Nuwan Asela (Tour guide)

I think maybe not, especially considering the way he played during the Twenty20 World Cup. I think it’s because of media hype that people always think he is the greatest. - Tania Gunatilaka (Parent)
