Coming out for the first time, the Trinitians produced an impressive allround performance to all but defeat the Peterites at Asgiriya. The loss of around three hours due to rain and bad light was crucial.

Ron Chandragupta and Rajitha Jayatunga batted well in tandem to add 78 for the third wicket. Then skipper Dinuk Wickramanayake shepherded the fail while top scoring with 55.

Consistent wicket taker Julian de Zylva had another five wicket haul.

Chiefly as a result of two atrocious shots and an amateurish run out, Peterites slid to 60 for 8. Skipper Dushan Hemantha and Chamila Obeysekera added respectability with a 9th wicket stand of 51. The Peterite batsmen may be a million dollars on a good batting track. But, on a pitch that turned at one end and kept low at the other, they were strangled by the accurate spin of Jayasinghe, Sudharaka and Wickramanayake.

Trinity 239 in55.3 overs (B. Palihawadana 12, L. Dissanayake 21, R. Chandragupta 48, R. Jayatunga 44, D. Wickramanayake 55, A. Jayasinghe 17, L. Jayasinghe 24, J. de Zylva 5 for 69, R. Liyanarachchi 2 for 35)

St. Peter’s 120 in 46.4 overs (D. Hemantha 33, C. Obeysekera 22, D. Karunaratne 14, J. Liyanage 15, L. Jayasinghe 2 for 29, D. Wickramanayake 2 for 9, C. Sudharaka 3 for 18) and 35 fir 5 in 27.2 overs (S. Fernando 12, L. Jayasinghe 3 for 1)

Anthonians jolted

The Anthonians were shocked by unfancied Holy Cross Kalutara who scored a narrow three run win on the first inning at Katugastota yesterday.

Kamesh’s 31 was the top score in a very modest Holy cross score of 111. But it was made to look mountainous by the Anthonians, who batted with one eye on the skies. Once the rot set in, it was too late to change course.

Mendis’ savage 56 that included five sixes and five fours was one of the highlights of the match which was bad affected by the rain on day one.

Holy Cross 111 in 66.3 overs (C. Kamesh 31, K. Shashika 13, T. Asanga 26 not out, C. Praveen 3 for 33, S. Bulathsinhala 3 for 25, N. Gunasinghe 3 for 22) and 70 for 4 in 7.4 overs (L. Mendis 56 not out, M, Udapola 2 for 15, N. Gunasinghe 2 for 1)

St. Anthony’s 108 in 29 overs ( S. Bulathsinhala 27, A. Ebert 18, C. Praveen 16, M. Udapola 13, S. Fernando 4 for 35, C. Kamesh 2 for 29, N. Chandika 2 for 12 and N. Chanaka 2 for 8)
