Jagath Alwis the Chairman of CEG Education Holdings and Director Technical of Ceylinco Insurance Company was conferred with a Honorary Doctorate by Middlesex University during the Middlesex University Graduation Ceremony held in Colombo on the 20th of October 2012

Mr. Alwis is the first Sri Lankan to awarded a Honorary Degree from Middlesex University, UK and previous recipients include Sir David Tang, Phil Tufnell, A.R. Rahman (multiple Oscar and Grammy winner) Rt. Hon. Sir Anerood Jugnauth (Prime Minister/President of Mauritius, Lord Hameed and a few other privileged personalities from UK.

Middlesex University is a well established, modern and forward-thinking university Middlesex University’s origins go back to the late 1880s, with the opening of two educational colleges in north London – St Katherine’s College and the Hornsey School of Arts and Crafts. Both colleges became part of Middlesex Polytechnic, which was founded in 1973. Middlesex was awarded the title University, by Royal Assent, in 1992.

Middlesex University follows a highly selective award policy to ensure that Honorary Doctorate awards are given to the most deserving candidates, distinguished individuals who merit special recognition for genuine accomplishment and distinction in a field or activity consonant with its mission.

The Academic Board of Middlesex University awards honorary degrees in recognition of the recipient’s commitment to social, economic and national causes, and support for cultural diversity. Comprehensive policies and stringent evaluation criteria guide the university’s decision in approving all honorary degrees, which ensures that Honorary Degrees are awarded to individuals who make exceptional contributions to their profession, community or directly to the university.

Jagath, a Graduate in Mathematics and Physics, from Kelaniya University, Sri Lanka, joined the National Insurance Corporation in 1982 as an Insurance Trainee to rise to become a Fellow Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London, a Fellow of the Indian Insurance Institute and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, UK.

Jagath joined the Ceylinco Insurance Company in March 1988 and, after serving in various positions within the company, was appointed to the Board as the Director (Technical) in January 1993.

Jagath has presented papers at many International Insurance and Re-insurance Conferences held in countries around the world and he is a regular contributor to the International Insurance and Re-insurance press.

He is one of the past Presidents of the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka and has served on the Executive Committee of the Association since 1988. He is also the Vice President of the Ceylon Society for Prevention of Accidents and one of the Past Secretaries of the Sri Lanka Insurance Institute. Presently he is a member of the Insurance Sub-committee of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce
Mr Alwis pioneered setting up of the ICBT Campus in 1999 which is the largest Private sector education institute in Sri Lanka having nine branch campuses in Sri Lanka and abroad.

He then set up the CEG education holding which is the single largest education conglomerate providing education from Montessori, high schools and tertiary education. The members of the CEG Education Holding are the ICBT Campus, American National College, NetAssit International, Wycherley International College, Modern Montessori International and St Nicholas International School.
He is an Old Boy of Isipathna College, Colombo 05.
