Shanth Fernando is perhaps best known for his love of all things art. He’s also the proud owner of one of the country’s most extensive private art collections. Part of this collection will be open to the public from October 25-31 at the art connoisseur’s own Paradise Road Galleries.

Centre stage at the exhibition is Australian artist Donald Friend, whose legendary period of residence in Sri Lanka in the late 50’s and early 60’s was known for the creation of some of his greatest paintings.

“Donald Friend painted some of his best pieces in Sri Lanka,” says Mr. Fernando, who owns six of the artist’s masterpieces. Of special significance is ‘Figures Leaping and Dancing’, for the artist was rarely known to capture motion in paint.

Some of these paintings are a labour of love. Mr. Fernando might not have sat at the easel and painted them himself, but he’s certainly gone through enormous effort to procure them. Some of Friend’s work was secured after standing in line for hours in the wee hours of morning at a sale by one of Sydney’s most prestigious dealers.

Also included in the exhibition are Indian artists Suman Gupta and Chandra Bhattacharjee and celebrated Pakistani artist Ali Kazim. The latter is a source of great pride to Mr. Fernando-Ali Kazim was thrust into the international spotlight following his discovery and support by the Paradise Road Galleries.

‘An Exhibition of a Private Collection of Art’ is open to the public from 10 a.m. to midnight at the Paradise Road Galleries till Wednesday, October 31.
