Institute of Chemistry Ceylon Professor Stanley Wijesundera Memorial Gold Medal Lecture

The above lecture will be delivered on Friday 14th September 2012 at 4.15 pm by Professor Sunethra Atukorala, Professor of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

The lecture will be delivered at the Institute of Chemistry headquarters situated at Adamanatane House, 341/22, Kotte Road, Rajagiriya.
The late Professor Stanley Wijesundera was an active member of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. He was the President of the Chemical Society of Ceylon in 1966 and Chairman of the Graduateship Board of Examiners of Institute of Chemistry Ceylon and rendered yeoman service to the professional body of chemists in Sri Lanka.

After completing studies at the University of Ceylon, Professor Wijesundera was awarded a BSc (Honours) in Chemistry. He proceeded to the UK and gained the M.Sc degree from University of London and D.Phil from University of Oxford.

On return to Ceylon he was appointed as a lecturer in the University of Ceylon, where he went on to become a Professor of Biochemistry, thereafter Head of the Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

Professor Stanley Wijesundera was the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo during 1979 to 1988 and was the Chairman of the Association of Commonwealth Universities from 1983-1984.
