The Maritime and Naval History Museum in Trincomalee which was renovated and declared open in 2014 with financial assistance from the Government of the Netherlands has fallen into disrepair and negligence.

Some of the valuable artifacts housed in the Museum have been left exposed with little or no care for these priceless items in it, much to the dismay of visitors.

The Museum is housed in the in a  seafront Dutch  colonial building and its renovation was carried out under the Sri Lanka-Netherlands cultural cooperation programme with the work carried out jointly by the Ministry of National Heritage, Archaeological Department and the Sri Lanka Navy in 2012.

It was inaugurated by then by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in May, 2013.

Inside the building, the power supply is disconnected to some rooms and visitors can barely see the items on display while the audio guides are all broken. Overall a place that can become popular with both local and foreign tourist lies neglected and in need of urgent attention from the authorities.
