CC to decide Tuesday on President’s AG pick
View(s):The Constitutional Council (CC) on Tuesday will take for consideration the name of Senior Deputy Auditor General L.S.P. Jayaratne, whose name has been resubmitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to be appointed as the Auditor General, after being rejected earlier.
Ms Jayaratna’s name was submitted after the name of Open University bursar W.M.K.P.A. Wickremesinghe was submitted and withdrawn subsequently.
The CC will convene on Tuesday at 2 pm to deliberate the President’s nominee.
The CC met on Friday with the new members representing civil society, Austin Fernando, Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne and Ranjith Ariyaratna in attendance, but no decision was taken regarding the appointment.
The Auditor General’s post has remained vacant for the past nine months after the former Auditor General Chulantha Wickremaratna retired.
The next most senior officer, Dharmapala Gammanpila, was appointed to the post in an acting capacity but was not nominated for the permanent post. His name was subsequently sent to the CC to be considered as Acting Auditor General.
Thereafter, three names were nominated for the post but were not approved by the CC.
This week the Mahanayaka Theras called on the government to consider Mr Gammanpila’s name for the post, considering his seniority.
